Understanding the energy classes of household appliances

When purchasing a household appliance (refrigerator, freezer, washing machine, etc.), the energy class is an essential indicator. It allows you to assess its energy consumption and its impact on your electricity bills. Since 2021, a new simplified scale from A to G has replaced the old label. Here's everything you need to know to understand and choose the right one.

1. New energy label (since March 2021)

The energy class scale was revised in 2021 for greater clarity. Gone are the A+++, A++, etc. ratings: replaced by a simple scale from A to G.

  • A : very low consumption
  • B to D : average to correct consumption
  • E to G : most energy-consuming devices

This new label takes into account not only energy consumption, but also criteria such as noise, cooling efficiency and standby consumption.

2. Color code: from green to red

The classes are accompanied by a very visual color code:

  • A : dark green (very economical)
  • B : light green
  • CD : yellow to orange
  • FG : light red to bright red (high consumption)

A QR code is also present to access the technical data of the device via the European EPREL database.

3. Examples of devices and classes by brand

Here are some real-life examples of energy ratings for various popular brands:

  • Hisense : refrigerators in class E or F (mid-range), high-end models in D
  • Beko : many models in E or D , with efforts on Low Frost
  • Samsung : Bespoke range in class C or D , with Inverter technology
  • Bosch : many models in class B or C , thanks to quiet and economical compressors
  • LG : Inverter devices in class C to D

4. Why is an A-rated device rare?

The new label was designed to allow room for innovation. Currently, very few devices are rated A. This means that brands will have to continue improving their technology to achieve this rating in the coming years.

5. Which devices are affected?

The new energy label applies to the following appliances:

  • Refrigerators and freezers
  • Washing machines / dryers
  • Dishwasher
  • Screens and televisions
  • Commercial refrigeration appliances

Brands like Hisense, Samsung, Bosch, Beko, and LG now clearly display their performance. Also consider the noise level, features (Inverter, Eco Mode), and the estimated lifespan of the appliance.
